Alabama 3 – 28/09/00- Scala, London

There was a support act, I suppose. Before they appeared though, actor John Hanna came on and made some rant about something or other. Then one of the Birmingham Six (or was it the Guildford Four?) came on and mumbled something or other about civil liberties. Fuck sake, this is a gig, not a political rally. Anyway, Alabama 3 finally came on, and were bleedin excellent. I’d actually never heard of them until a couple of days before – just went along with some friends, but I recognized ‘Woke Up This Morning’ (The Sopranos), which was evidently their anthem. An odd collection of musicians, playing an odd selection of styles – I guess I’d describe them as ‘sleazy acid country.’ Very danceable indeed. Decent gig, so I purchased ‘Exile On Coldharbour Lane’ – never particularly grew to like it though…
